Staff Writer On April 8th, Apple made the newest software update, IOS 8.3, available for download. The update included many new features. Siri can now speak seven new languages. In addition, the update also prevents the issue of screen rotation between landscape to portrait. Lastly, it keeps group conversations from splitting and removes the ability to forward and delete individual messages. With this update, 300 new emojis were added to the keyboard. Before the update the emojis were lacking different skin tones other than an Asian man wearing a gua pi cap and an Indian man wearing a turban. The new emojis are racially diverse, by providing options for skin color. “They look totally cute! I love them,” said Mrs. Steger when asked about the emojis. Now, there’s even 32 more country flag emojis added to the keyboard. “I feel likes some of the people look yellow,” said Abby Beckley when looking at the new updated emojis. Aaron Buck added, “I agree, but I like how there are so many new emojis to pick from.” By Andrew Meckert
Technology Editor LCD, LED, Plasma, OLED! There are so many TV types, and remembering them can be confusing. Ian Campbell agrees, asking ”Why do we need so many TVs?” But there’s a new kid on the block: Quantum-Dot TVs. These new TVs were unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015. They seem cool enough, but what are they, how do they work, and most importantly, how good are they compared to all of the other kinds of TVs? So, a Quantum-Dot (QD) TV is basically an LCD television with better colors. It works by the backlight being blue instead of yellow. This blue light then goes through the Quantum Dots to create vivid colors. Evan Melendez demands high quality pictures, explaining, ”I like TVs with good colors.” Because of this advanced technology, the TVs will be expensive, especially because they will most likely all be 4K TVs, offering super high resolution. The biggest competitors to QD televisions are OLEDs, TVs with organic compounds in their LEDs which make them bright and beautiful. Both OLEDs and QD TVs will be expensive but OLEDs are definitely more. Which one is better? They both have their pros and cons, and which one you should get depends on what you want in a TV. They both have amazing 4K displays, and everybody loves that.”I like high quality screens, because it really feels like you are in the movie!” said Elizabeth Meckert. Either way, you will definitely have a great TV and experience high definition like consumers have never seen before. By Kayla Krueger
Staff Writer Recently, there has been some controversy about the new Apple Watch. It’s an ordinary watch with quite the twist. This watch is equipped with a digital crown that is used to zoom into icons on the watch’s relatively small Retina display touchscreen. Using a new application entitled “Glances,” users can quickly check their schedule, time and weather. But is the Apple watch really suitable for adolescents or students at Lakeridge Junior High? This reporter took to the office to interview some of the staff and get their opinions on the situation. The first person interviewed was Sue Steger. “Its kind of cool to see a Sci-Fi watch like this, but I don’t think it’s really necessary,” Steger explained. “We already use our phones enough and I think the Apple Watch would just be another distraction.” Next, Kurt Schultz, the Principal of Lakeridge Junior High, was asked a few questions about how the Apple Watch might work within the school. “It’s kind of hard to answer a question like this, so this is part of the reason I took to student council to start the topic on cell phones, because we know that a lot of students carry their phones on them on a daily basis,” Schultz said. “We need to figure out if the rules still fit, or if we need to adjust the rules for a different reality. I guess I don’t have a ‘we would ban them’ or ‘we would totally support them’ kind of answer. I don’t have a really strong opinion. What we need to do is talk to students and figure out what they think we should do and get the student perspective, and then talk to teachers and see what they are experiencing in their classrooms, and see how do we deal with this new thing that exists,” explains Schultz. To conclude, Lakeridge Junior High is going to have to wait to make real rules regarding the Apple Watch. If it really starts to become a problem, the office staff is going to think of a solution, whether it’s banning the watches or not. By Ian Campbell
Staff Writer Sometimes, people receive text messages but are too tired to respond or are unable to receive the messages. Maybe the phone is in another room or is on silent mode. However, this might not be a problem anymore with the new Apple Watch. The Apple Watch was released March 24, 2015. It has three versions. The Watch, the Watch Sport, and the Watch Edition. The Apple Watch has a price from $350 all the way to $17,000 for the Watch Edition. The Apple Watch Edition is an 18 Karat gold watch that comes in a yellow or rose case with sapphire crystal. One of the reasons the Apple Watch can be so expensive is that for the metal link bracelet has 100 pieces that takes a total of nine hours to cut. Along with the heavy price tag, the Apple Watch can comes in different designs of watch straps like leather, link, a Milanese loop, or sport band. The Apple Watch has sensors on the back that makes the watch a running companion that tracks exercise and vital signs. It also has a power save mode along with a brand new style of charger. Additionally, the Apple Watch has 18 hours of battery life. The Apple Watches come in two sizes: the 38 and 42 millimeter watch. Will students at LJHS reflect the latest trend? Only time will tell. |
