Staff Writer Watchers can hear the loud noises of the propellers in the air -- that is the sound of vintage airplanes flying in from all around the Northwest to be a part of the annual Hood River Fly In! This two-day event is held on September 9th to September 8th at the WAAAM (Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum). With more than 200 airplanes, including old war planes, biplanes, gliders, stunt planes, $500,000 planes, spy drones, and so many more, the WAAAM “has one of the largest collections of still flying antique aeroplanes and still driving antique automobiles in the country.” The coolest part of the fly in is when you get to watch all of the vintage planes take off! One of the coolest planes that took of was a water scoop plane! There were also private jets, bombers, and so many more airplanes that took off. You could see the ones in the air but, there were planes on the ground all lined up so that you can walk by and get a glance of them. “This is one of the best days of my life!” exclaimed my brother, Spencer, airplane fanatic and future pilot. His favorite was the flying tiger, one of the old WW2 airplanes being exhibited. One of the attractions at the Fly In was a chance to hop in a biplane and fly above the Columbia Gorge. Unfortunately the biplane broke down before we could go on. “I guess it was not meant to be,” said Amy Bell, Lake Oswego resident/Mother. If your brother, sister, son or daughter loves airplanes, take them to the Hood River Fly In and they will freak! Just like my brother did when he walked out and saw his most favorite airplane. Staff Writer Lakeridge Junior High School is a very run down school because of how old it is. The Middle School located in Lake Oswego, Oregon has been around for more than 50 years and because of its old age it has started to fall apart. As you can see from the picture above, there are many cracks in the school walls. this picture was taken by a local reporter in Mr. Kelly’s classroom. Cracks like these can cause leaks when it rains hard enough. Even the foundation of the school has started to collapse in on itself, the library used to have doors that lead into a very nice area with a bench and some trees and grass but It’s dangerous even to try to open one of the doors. With the dreaded Cascadia earthquake looming in the back of oregonian’s heads, these structural weaknesses can be a very serious risk. If the Cascadia earthquake were to happen before the new school is built and used then its very likely for the entire school’s foundation to collapse and kill many students. Many people have mixed feelings about the new school for reasons such as losing all the memories of when they went to Lakeridge or their kids went to Lakeridge and all of the sentimental value this school has. Ms. Stegar was quoted saying “I have mixed feelings about the new school because I went to school here and my kids went to school here, so I have sentimental attachment to Waluga Junior High (Lakeridge Junior High’s old name), but despite that I am still very excited about all the innovative ideas, the cleanliness, but most of all the safety.” Stegar is definitely not alone on that standpoint. In conclusion, the new school will have a huge amount of benefits. At the same time it will have some downsides for people losing the middle school that they went to. Even though the new school will have its ups and downs the general population believes that the benefits outweigh the downsides by a huge amount. Image by pamplinmediagroup.com By Liam Crafton
Staff Writer The Lake Oswego School Board is considering three proposals for school renovation over the next twenty-five years, one of which would including building a new school at the Lakeridge Junior High site. The LOSD has many buildings in need of severe repairs. Both Oak Creek Elementary and Lakeridge Junior High have leaks, and LJH also has large cracks throughout due to foundation issues. Because of the poor school conditions, a proposal has been made to build two new schools and update the others. Students and teachers alike at LJH are excited about the proposal, which has been needed for a long time. “It definitely needs to happen because the school is falling into disrepair with caved in ceilings,” said Aidan Strealy, an eighth grader at LJH. “It would be a safer building, more advanced building, and parents would want to put their kids in school,”. Students are also looking forward to newer features in the new building, such as a larger lunch room to accommodate the growing student body, solar panels, and safer architecture. “It would make everyone more together. Right now 6th grade is so far away. Also it would be safer, with no leaks and cracks. It’d be more secure,” explains Julie Crafton, a sixth grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. Mrs. Crafton has always noticed the low quality of LJH, but was not adamant about the new school proposal until a student pointed out to her that “a light was leaking”, or at least the ceiling around it was. There are major issues that would be fixed in a new building. However, there are some issues with the plans. Funds would either have to raised from parents or old schools would have to be sold to pay for new buildings. According a survey cited by Oregon Live, the district needs to spend $24 million over the next ten years to maintain current facilities. Rebuilding schools would make it even more costly. The construction would also take longer than summer break to build the new schools, so students would be displaced or distracted. “The year of displacement that it takes to rebuild would be bad,” Mrs. Crafton expalined. When asked if keeping students at LJH while building a new facility, Strealy also had concerns. “It would be very distracting from large noises, and people would deviate from what they’re supposed to do.” While there are some complications, students and teachers agree a new Lakeridge Junior High is extremely necessary. Staff Writer When visiting Oregon, of course Portland is one of the main attractions but there’s so much to do after visiting downtown Portland. For example, the beautiful town of Astoria just two hours away from the heart of Portland. Here, you can visit independent bakeries, the Oregon Film Museum showcasing artifacts from movies shot in Oregon, and observe the beautiful views. “Astoria is such a cozy town it really felt like home,” said a recent visitor. Another place to find breathtaking views is in the Oregon Coast. Cannon Beach offers independent boutiques and bookstores as well as the gorgeous beach, although the water is mainly a little too chilly to go in enjoyably. Seaside and Brookings are also a beautiful sight and worth a visit. So if visitors can’t handle the lack of heat of the water in the coast the Evergreen Waves and Wings water park is worth a visit. This park features a variety of slides and a family friendly wave pool.Though, travellers not into water parks but travelling with a group are in luck because they have the opportunity to stop by the aircraft museum linked with the water park for only $12. But visitors don’t have to pay to have an enjoyable time. George Rogers (located in Lake Oswego) will keep parkgoers busy all day. The park features a playground and views of the Willamette River that includes a sanded area for sitting, reading, and chatting. The park also includes multiple trails to hike. “My friends and i really enjoy taking advantage of the trials, the park is spectacular and a great place to spend your afternoon,” says a student at Lakeridge. Oregon features many fun, beautiful and unique attractions across the state. There are so many hidden gems to still be found and hundreds enjoy exploring the land everyday. Staff Writer On February 1 there was a caucus in Iowa between each of the Republican candidates and each of the Democratic candidates. But who won? Hillary Clinton won against Bernie Sanders in the Iowa democratic Caucus. Though by a very thin margin of 0.3 percent. This means that there is an almost even amount of democrats voting for Clinton and Sanders. ”The Iowa Democratic Party has declared Hillary Clinton the winner of the 2016 Democratic caucuses.” said Douglas Perry of the Oregonian. Ted Cruz won against Donald Trump and Marco Rubio in the Iowa Republican Caucus, even though most people expected Donald Trump to win because of his past lead. ”In a night of surprises, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz rode a wave of strong Evangelical support to a victory over national front-runner Donald Trump in the GOP's Iowa caucuses, according to NBC News.” said Everett Rosenfeld of CNBC. There was another unexpected happening. Marco Rubio got closer to the same percentage of voters as Donald Trump than most people expected, the former having been previously quite a few points behind the other two major candidates. Staff Writer Throughout Portland there are so many cool and fun places teens can hangout at. Many students want to visit downtown, but don't know which places could be enjoyed by a younger crowd. One place that sounds very fun to go to is called Punch Bowl. It’s a place where you can go bowling, play arcade games, darts, shuffleboard, or just hangout and have something to eat. Punch bowl is located at Pioneer Square. This place has such a wide variety of games and activities. Another place like Punch Bowl is Wunderland. It’s located on Belmont st. and it only costs five cents for one arcade game. They have most of the old school games such as Pac Man and Defender. They also do have newer games to play as well. If you're someone who is into alternative bands or singers, there are so many locations around Portland to go and see one a concert. There’s the Crystal Ballroom on Burnside which is used for smaller bands. Arlene Schnitzer concert hall is on Broadway street which is a bigger venue that may attract more well-known acts. Hawthorne Theatre is much like the Crystal Ballroom but it’s in a very cool location on SE Hawthorne. Food carts are another really fun thing to do in Portland. Portland is known for having different and unique food carts. The best pod of food carts is located on 23rd st. It’s called "Taste of Portland." They have a fireplace in the middle of the carts where visitors can sit and enjoy the warmth. Sometimes they will have live bands come and perform. Food carts have a wide variety of foods from Mexican, Asian, Norwegian, to Indian food - a personal favorite. Image by oregonlive.com By Helen Stelk
Staff Writer An adorable addition has been made to the Portland Fire Department. They have just adopted a cute, black English Labrador named Zeus. The new addition was made January 30th. Lilo, Zeus’s cousin, was getting a little old for the fire fighting position. They then made the switch to the puppy. Zeus will have to go through three to five hours of training just to join the team. He will go through training for a year with his handler, Jackson. The puppy lives with Jackson and Lilo. They train as much as possible, and Zeus gets rewarded with treats. Dogs have been working with firefighters for 600 years! They are a big help to finding people when in fires. But that’s not just what they are good at. Once they have gone through training they can smell out gasoline, lighter, alcohol, and many other dangerous substances. An amazing fact about dogs is, if you were to make a Molotov cocktail, you’d have to wash your hands at least 17 times before a dog would be unable to detect traces of petroleum on your skin. When Jackson was asked about his canine partner in crime he responded. "He's real kind of methodical ... I like that about him. He searches every little nook and corner." When asked, Grace Engel stated “I think this is a cute adorable addition to the fire department. I hope the puppy does well, and succeeds.” |
