Staff Writer The oldest sport ever to be recorded, lacrosse was a very popular sport in 1850 but when the Native American culture continued to be decimated, so was the sport. This article will explain and talk about the reincarnation of lacrosse. 1856, William George Beers, a Canadian dentist, founded the Montreal Lacrosse Club. Early data on lacrosse, from missionaries such as French Jesuits in Huron country in the 1630s and English explorers, such as Jonathan Carver in the mid-eighteenth century Great Lakes area, are scant and often conflicting. They inform us mostly about team size, equipment used, the duration of games and length of playing fields but tell us almost nothing about stickhandling, game strategy, or the rules of play. Now there are 46 countries that have at least a high school lacrosse team. ”Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by American Indians at the time of European contact," explained a lacrosse historian. “During the summer of 1998, Jake “Body By Jake” “Steinfeld was inspired to start a professional outdoor lacrosse league after reading a magazine article about the growth of the sport of lacrosse”. Now lacrosse has pro teams, MLL is comprised of nine teams across the US. The Atlanta Blaze, Boston Cannons, Florida Launch, Charlotte Hounds, New York Lizards, Chesapeake Bayhawks, Ohio Machine, Denver Outlaws, and the Rochester Rattlers. Now lacrosse is one of the most fastest growing sports in the world. There are many companies that create lacrosse gear and sticks and many websites on the sport itself. The local high schools have lacrosse teams as well. Comments are closed.
