Opinion Writer At Lakeridge Junior High, we have a total of five school sports: girls and boys basketball, track, as well as wrestling for boys and volleyball for girls. However, with all of these sports, perhaps we should also have other popular sports such as soccer, football, and lacrosse. Lakeridge Junior High should have other school sports beyond just the five currently offered. Even though students already play these sports outside of school, having them in school would allow students to get to know new students and even learn a new sport. “I would definitely try out!” says Natalie Goldberg, who is in seventh grade and plays lacrosse. “Yeah it would be fun,” says Kelin Humbert, also in seventh grade. A basketball player, Humbert says “It would be something new at LJHS and I think that many people would try out.” I definitely agreed with Humbert: additional sports would be something new and fun to offer to students and open the doors to the future. Mr. Schultz was interviewed about the history of Lakeridge sports. “Historically, once Lakeridge did have football and soccer as a school sport, and the closet in the boys locker room, which is now used as a storage compartment, actually used to be used as a room to dry football gear and equipment,” Schultz explained. Why not now? Well there are many reasons: money, jerseys and equipment will be costly, but it’s not something LJHS isn’t used to. We do have sports that cost money in order to participate. So, having more sports teams will cost more than simply allowing the sports offered now. “Having soccer at our school would allow us students to make new friends and also represent our school in a good way,” says Audrey Kirkpatrick. “It would also allow students who don’t want to pay as much as competitive soccer, instead they could play on a school team with their friends” Having lacrosse, football, soccer as school sports at LJHS would allow our community to come closer together as well as giving the Lake Oswego community a good impression of our school. Staff Writer The soccer events of last week were highlighted by Manchester United's domination over Manchester City in the Manchester Derby. This game between Man City and Man United has always been hotly contested. Man City came out strong with the first goal scored by Sergio Aguero in the 8th minute. Man United then responded with a goal six minutes later scored by the left Midfielder Ashley Young. There was some “back and forth” playing until Marouane Fellaini scored a cross header from Ashley Young. With a score of 2-1 of going into the half, United didnt look like a clear winner. After the half, Manchester United took it away with two goals to Manchester City’s one. The first of United’s goals was a through ball that was a questionably offsides pass from Wayne Rooney to Juan Mata. The shot was scored in “nutmeg” fashion, finding the net between the legs of Joe Hart. Manchester United then followed up with another goal, scoring with a header from Chris Smalling and making the score 4-1 Manchester United in the 75th minute. This was a very surprising to fans and players. With another goal at the very end of the game from Man City, the surprising score line of 4-2 was finalized. This extraordinary win over Manchester City had another importance as well. This win put them one point behind Arsenal in the Premier League. Playing the top team in the league this week, Chelsea, will decide the number one spot in league rankings. |
