Staff Writer Gratitude is one of the most treasured qualities a person can show. People who risk their lives just to help others are far more than worthy of an act of thankfulness and that’s what a 15 year old girl did to show she is appreciative of local Kansas police. On April 1, 2016 a photo of a napkin with the words “Thanks for keeping us safe” became viral. Though the actual event occurred on March 24th, the Facebook post has just gotten recognition recently and has received 3,000 “likes”. So what happened that made this photo viral? At a Kansas Chipotle, two police officers that were both captains named Rance Quinn and George Sims sat down to a meal of good ol’ mexican cuisine. Little did they know that a nearby admirer was about to swoop in and give the officers a gift of gratitude they would never forget. "This young lady touched us in a way she might not have realized and before we could react to it the family walked out," Quinn and Sims wrote on the Facebook post. The girl’s family also paid for the police officers’ meals which showed just how much they appreciate the duties they perform in their community. That grateful gift didn’t stop giving. According to www.opposingviews.com, that same day a woman with two children one of which who was blind, approached Quinn and Sims and told them how her deaf son always wanted to meet a police officer. Fortunately, that little boy’s dream came true that day. There must have been a special appreciation potion in the water because yet again, another deaf citizen approached Quinn and Sims as they were walking out. She gave both of them a gift card and thanked them for what they do. “She went on to say she always wanted to join but she is also deaf and could not," Quinn and Sims wrote on the Facebook post. "As I looked at her I could see true emotion in her eyes and she appeared to be tearing up. We tried to refuse the cards but she was having none of it. She said she wanted to buy our dinner but the other table did and bought us the cards instead." According to the Nationwide Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, 63 officers have died on the job this year compared to 45 at the same time last year which is a 40 percent increase. Twenty three of those deaths were due to firearm related incidents, a 53 percent increase from the same time last year. With these increased percentages, people must notice how each year police officers die just to save the lives of other people. The article about the thoughtful note is a shout for more recognition toward the police staff in every community, even outside of the US. People with such demanding jobs, both mentally and physically, need to be applauded for their duties. Police officers aren’t just doing their job for themselves; they are doing it to protect the well being of others which is one of the most humbling things a person can do. Officers should continue to be beyond recognized for the actions these brave men and women perform each day to keep the community safe. Photo by simon.com By Griffin Beard
Staff Writer April 26th, 2015 - Baltimore YouTuber Dan Bell stepped out of his comfort zone to film inside the abandoned marketplace mall the day before demolition. The second he found an entry, he slithered in quietly. He doesn’t take anything, and leaves no trace. All he takes, is some footage for his “Abandoned Mall Series.” These sights have been more and more common among the United States, as Malls have been dying due to online shopping sites such as Amazon.com, Jet.com, and Ebay.com. “It’s a sad sight,” said Bell. “I’ve seen footage of malls opening as a child, and seeing them now… It’s terrible.” In Oregon, residents may have not seen many abandoned buildings, as Portland has been good about keeping old buildings. The only few exceptions might include Thrill-Ville USA, an abandoned amusement park, and the famous cement factory in the industrial part of Portland. Oregon malls are in danger of closing if they don’t renovate or have a new business pitch. Some malls have been thinking about adding an amazon store, where the consumers order arrives at the store, are put in a locker, and when the consumer arrives, the consumer gets a key to a locker, gets his stuff, and returns the key. West coast malls, however, have been surprisingly doing well, as it seems as if there is only one mall for each area of the city. Something equal like this isn’t being done on the East Coast, as when the malls were built they were all jumbled together, put by the highway in hopes of drivers stopping by. As for the fate of Oregon malls, nobody will really know until it happens. Image by eonline.com By Lucas Ahrend
Staff Writer 2016 is a critical year for our country. The citizens will need to make a decision based on how they want our country to look in the future. The future of America lies in the hands of voters, and how they want the future of America to look like. “That's the good thing about being president, I can do whatever I want,” said President Obama. Three republicans are in the race: Donald Trump who wants to build a wall, ban muslim immigration, and lower taxes. John Kasich who wants to balance the budget and grow the economy. Ted Cruz who wants to lower taxes for everyone, protect the constitution, and repeal Obamacare. The republican nominee will be Donald Trump. “That's one of the nice things. I mean, part of the beauty of me is that I'm very rich. So if I need $600 million, I can put $600 million myself. That's a huge advantage. I must tell you, that's a huge advantage over the other candidates,” explained Trump. Two democrats are in the race: Hillary Clinton who wants to implement Australia-like gun control and destroy the wage gap. The other democrat Bernie Sanders wants to give people free college, healthcare, and raise taxes on the rich up to 52%. The democratic nominee will be Hillary Clinton. “People can judge me for what I've done. And I think when somebody's out in the public eye, that's what they do. So I'm fully comfortable with who I am, what I stand for, and what I've always stood for,” said Clinton. In the past eight years we have needed to recover from the great recession, but some things have gotten worse. Poverty rates have gone up as well as home ownership going down. Debt rates have also gone up in recent years, and the price of health care is way up. The race for the White House will be extremely close, and that is all anyone can guarantee. The race will come to key states like Ohio, New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida. Trump will have to rely on key southern states whereas Clinton needs to rely on the west coast and the northeast. No matter what happens America's future depends on who shows up to vote, and who stays home. |
