Staff Writer An adorable addition has been made to the Portland Fire Department. They have just adopted a cute, black English Labrador named Zeus. The new addition was made January 30th. Lilo, Zeus’s cousin, was getting a little old for the fire fighting position. They then made the switch to the puppy. Zeus will have to go through three to five hours of training just to join the team. He will go through training for a year with his handler, Jackson. The puppy lives with Jackson and Lilo. They train as much as possible, and Zeus gets rewarded with treats. Dogs have been working with firefighters for 600 years! They are a big help to finding people when in fires. But that’s not just what they are good at. Once they have gone through training they can smell out gasoline, lighter, alcohol, and many other dangerous substances. An amazing fact about dogs is, if you were to make a Molotov cocktail, you’d have to wash your hands at least 17 times before a dog would be unable to detect traces of petroleum on your skin. When Jackson was asked about his canine partner in crime he responded. "He's real kind of methodical ... I like that about him. He searches every little nook and corner." When asked, Grace Engel stated “I think this is a cute adorable addition to the fire department. I hope the puppy does well, and succeeds.” Comments are closed.
